Like a fine wine, sometimes you just have to wait for it to age awhile;
or like wise old men/women, sometimes they take longer getting started
in the morning :-)

I think that you'll notice that after you've opened OOo, close, and
reopen within the times set in Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org|Memory -
Remove from memory after x, that OOo opens pretty fast.

So in your case where you have more memory than you could possibly ever
use for standard applications; just set the memory option to as long as
you want. For instance, set it to 10 hours, start OOo in the morning,
close and open it as much as you want during your working day and it
will reopen in a matter of seconds. The highest that you can set it is
for 23 hours 59 minutes.

Starting OOo 2.2 on a 700MHZ/256MB system with a slow laptop hard drive
takes me about 14 seconds. If I close and restart within the time frame
of the memory settings from above it takes 6 seconds to open back up.

As others have mentioned, OOo has to check a lot more things than MS
Office does due to the fact that it *is* a multi-platform office suite.
If MS Office were a multi-platform office suite, I suspect that it would
take just as long, or longer to start.

So, in the end enjoy the few additional seconds that it takes OOo to
start up, use the time to count the extra money you've saved, and just
be happy that you can actually run it on Linux (or Windows, or Mac, or
Solaris, etc) as you've indicated above.

Or better yet; use the few additional seconds each time OOo opens to
write a note of thanks to all the fine folks that have contributed their
time, expertise, programing experience, marketing, documentation,
wizards, local language translations, etc, and thought in providing such
an outstanding office suite. One that you, and your fellow university
students, professors, friends, neighbors, relatives, government, etc,
can download and run *for free*.
