Thomas: I'm assuming that you downloaded the American English version of OpenOffice.org for your Mac. Thank you for doing so. Now, for your question. Enabling automatic spell checking is done through the Tools -> Options dialog box. Under Language Settings, Languages, ensure that English(USA) is selected as the Default for Western. Select the Writing Aids, and check the box to the left of the Check Spelling as You Write or click on the ABC with a red underline icon which turns this feature on and off. However, I recommend checking the language used before attempting to use the icon.
