I have not converted to Thunderbird (yet) but I try to keep the FireFox and OpenOffice up to date.
The only problem is finding a good news-reader for alt.binaries.railroad (I think that is the address) so I can get my Railroad pictures. Outlook Express still works for me, bu I will change that soon (hopefully) I would love to see someone take OOo/FireFox/Thunderbird/etc. and test it head to head on same computer/OS/etc. This way we can have data to present to our local companies and governments with information that is more than what we all feel about MS's suite and their nead to rule the software world.
