Thanks for the help.  I got it now--I wasn't trying not to use headers or
footers.  The problem was that I was trying to insert numbers into a
document that I'd already written without page numbers.  It's ten pages long
or so.  I still can't get numbers onto that, but I did figure out how to do
them in a new document.  That makes sense.   Part of my problem is not
understanding the  whole "page styles" thing.  Like Page style 1, Page style
2, and on...  I'll read more and see if I can get it.

Hi Jon,

FYI when posting to mailing lists it is customary to bottom post (i.e..
put your response/reply below the posted message), but no matter.

In addition to Dan's excellent advice, try this:
With the cursor inside the header (or footer) field, go to the "Insert"
menu and select "Fields -> Page Number" this number will automatically
increment with each new page.
