Yes, I think that reading the help could be very useful. First when I tried FontWorks it felt like a lot of features were missing, but the more I fiddled with it the more of my questions got answered and I found that I could do just about what I want with it. At least those basic stuff can be done, such as adjusting the measurements (height, width and depth, or x, y and z if you prefer that terminology), change position of lighting and play with shadows and colours, of course. I think you can rotate in all three dimensions too. And I also there were a few features that I didn't need as well.
