When I type in '0987 (using the key to the right of the semi colon as
the apostrophe), the apostrophe DOES appear in the cell.
Does anyone else experience this? Is there a different key I should be
using as the apostrophe?
Ha! Are you ready to feel silly? This was happening to me--confounding
me for weeks, until I had a light bulb go on the other day: I had turned
on Autocorrect replacement of ASCII quotes for fancy quotes (for
_Writer_ of course). The ASCII apostrophe I was typing was instantly
being changed to a fancy single quote and no longer recognized by Calc
as the text signal. The difference between ' and ‘ is nearly impossible
to see under normal screen conditions.
Now, did you realize that the Autocorrect settings apply to _every_ OOo
app? I didn't. Too bad, isn't it? The setting you want for Writer
interferes with Calc.
Aside from turning off the single quote replacement, you can also type
Ctrl+Z (undo) after you type the leading apostrophe. That will revert
the single quote back to the ascii apostrophe, but you have to remember
to do it.
Another workaround is to pre-format the cells to text, then you don't
need an apostrophe: whatever you enter will be text.
