Now I can reproduce the problem.
Always when I'm selecting
'AutoText' -> 'New (Text only)' -> 'Close'
there's afterwards a paragraph break with <F3>.
Selecting 'AutoText' -> 'New' -> 'Close'
is creating a correct version without break.
Regarding the different functions of 'New (Text only)' and 'New';
IMHO it's necessary to scrutinize resultant problems with styles and
formatting [...]
IMHO these should be the different functions:
- Choosing 'New' adds AutoText with it's formatting styles.
- Choosing 'New (text only)' adds AutoTe; without formatting styles;
it will get the formatting styles of the paragraph where it is inserted.
But in reality it seems, it doesn't work in this way
(as I'm trying to understand it; possibly some formatting styles do -
and other do not? ...)
Thanks for this. You are quite right. If the user needs to use "New
(text only)" instead of "New" (which I didn't imagine was the case from
the original problem specification), then (1) the problem exists and (2)
my workaround will not help.
So my revised solution is:
o Use "New", not "New (text only)" from the AutoText drop-down menu if
possible.
o If you need to use "New (text only)", invoke the AutoText once,
producing the incorrect result. Then select the result but *without the
erroneous newline*, and return to AutoText to modify the existing entry
using "Replace" (not "Replace (text only)!) from the AutoText drop-down
menu.
Indeed - that's repairing the malfunction. :-)
Since the creation process ("New (text only)") will have stripped
whatever was necessary, you cannot need the "(text only)" function this
time.
After this correction, the AutoText entry will behave as it should.

P.S. -
While searching for more information, I've found a tip from
fr.OpenOffice.org to an interesting feature in OOo, which creates
a document with all the AutoText entries (names) and their shortcuts:
Run Tools|Macros -> Organize Macros -> OpenOffice.org Basic ->
OpenOffice.org Macros -> Gimmicks -> Autotext -> Main -> <Run> ...
