i tried out several other unicode character sets (other than the devanagri ones), and the problem largely remained the same.

of the character sets tested (anjal, tamil99, arabic, arabic-QWERTY, devanagari, devanagari-QWERTY, bulgarian, cherokee-QWERTY, faroese, gujarati-QWERTY, hanin, icelandic, inuktitut-nunavut, ITABC, nepali, serbian-latin, thai, wubi-xing, wubi-hua, 3-set korean) only arabic and persian (using the baghdad font - but i don't know whether it works properly since i cannot read arabic or persian) were able to dispaly the respective unicode characters (as per the respective keyboard viewers).

did anyone else also face similar problems?? is this an OOo issue or a problem with my particular configuration? if nobody has an answer to this, could somebody PLEASE try out some of the unicode character sets and see whether they work in the current version for X11 or not??

many thanks for your help!

since I updated from 2.0 to 2.2 I can no longer write/display anything using the devanagari/devanagari-QWERTY unicode fonts - everything is replaced by empty squares... does anyone know what I need to do to get back the ability to write/display devanagari script??
many thanks for any help!
