Potentially try the other version and see if the problem persists...
That did the trick. I downloaded the 2.2.0 RPMs from
download.openoffice.org, removed the OpenOffice_org-2.0.4-38.2.3 RPMs
from SuSE, and now Writer and Calc start up fine.
(Too late to try Bill's suggestion - as I have just blown away the old
installation)
