Thanks to all who made suggestions about uninstalling Openoffice from my XP computer. The solution was found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. I now have version Openoffice 2.2 running fine.

Hi,

You may have by now made too many changes, but have you tried a System Restore? If you are using Windows XP then a restore point may have been set when you 'cleaned' your registry. The program can be found in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore Try restoring to a date when everything was peachy. If it doesn't work then you can reverse the process and you haven't lost anything.

Now you know why that registry was a bad idea. You might want to try Linux.
