Microsoft can't go to the ODF format because it would put them out of business. They probably make more money selling Office than they do selling OSs.


But Microsoft is creating an ODF plugin for Word and it can be downloaded. There is also an ODF plugin from Sun for Word. Soon to be one for Excel as well.

Microsoft has to support ODF to keep selling to some governments that are mandated to move to ODF in the next few years. No support, no customers in those agencies.
