thanks for your email. I seem to have resolved the issue by some twist of
fate, I know not which settings I changed that did the trick. Perhaps it
was finally reaching a restore point that worked. My other computer does
not have open office installed so I was not sure how to unlock it from
there.
Another question I have wondered about is if there is a way to set up open
office to have the option to open documents in Microsoft office occasionally
when I need to email docs to friends who do not have open office.
Would I need to uninstall and then reinstall to change those settings?

With file associations it is all of nothing. You have to decide which
application you want to open the files then set the association as
such.
If, in some cases, you want another application to open the file, then
you will need to, for that instance, right click then 'open as' and
select the other application.
