I think you mean: Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org Writer|Compatibility
"Use printer metrics for document formating" is not checked on my
Ubuntuized 2.2. when I open a new document or when I open an old
document (including a MS Word doc). I think you need to remove your
.openoffice.org2 directory and start with a fresh profile.
