2)  I can confirm with Staroffice/Openoffice on FC6 and
removing .openoffice* or .staroffice* did not change the behavior. I was
playing around with the languages and I selected "kannada" in the
language section menu when I logged into gnome or kde ... not sure which
one. Thunderbird, evolution, firefox were fine, but staroffice and
openoffice were almost unusable as the text in the menus were just some
strange symbols. Other issues with FC like broken updates etc. forced me
to move to ubuntu. Have not tried to fiddle with languages again. .....
not sure IF I want reproduce the behavior ;-)
