In my work, the conversion of pdf docs to an editable form is a necessary
function that I had to and did resolve.

I use Foxit Reader to view pdf files. It's small, free, and less
prone to hang my system. It is my default app associated with pdf
files.

This doesn't work well for me, particularly for long documents. The
line breaks are usually wrong and paragraphs are run together, so
the space between them can't be adjusted.

I use Solid Converter, which provides enough formatting options to
enable you to get it right, one way or another. It will produce a
Word doc or rtf file which as you know, open office can open and
edit with no problem.

It is neither free nor open code but it does the job and isn't
expensive.
