Language Tool offers grammar checking for both German and English.
IIRC, the PERL based grammar checker has a primitive rule set for
Japanese. [Sorry, I've forgotten its name.]
You will need to create a set of language specific styles. This includes
page styles, if you are writing Japanese vertically. or left to right.
FWIW, I'd suggest switching to OOo 1.1.5, if your system can't run OOo 2.2.
