I'm using OOo 2.2 on Windows XP.

I have a newsletter which I edit. There needs to be one page that
is landscape, with the other pages portrait. I know how to use page
styles and get one page oriented as landscape, by creating a
"landscape" page style.

The problem is as follows. I have things all set up, with the page
that needs to be landscape formatted correctly to landscape, and
looking as it should. This is on a later page, say page 6 or so.
What I've found is that often (many times, did not just happen
once), I'll make some edit to an early page, let's say page 2. Like
I'll delete a blank line or something like that. When I do that,
the landscape page reverts to the default page style, with a
portrait orientation.

I can think of no way that what I did on page 2 should interact
with the page style on page 6. What I've done on page 2 does not
affect the pagination at all. The page 2 to 3 page break is still
in the same page. Page 3 still looks like it did before I did the
editing on page 2. So how can the page style of page 6 be affected?

I know how to change the style of page 6 back to landscape, but
it's getting very frustrating, especially for something that seems
like it should have no impact on the page 6 page style.

If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. Thanks.

Is there a page break on "page 5" which lists your landscape (page 6) as the next page style?
Dan

Yes, if I understand your question right. That's how I implemented the landscape page style on page 6. When at the bottom of page 5, I selected Insert > Manual Break > Page Break, and selected "Landscape" as the style. That gave me the landscape page that I needed. (It's just that it vanishes for no obvious reason.)
