I tried Word 2000 and found it hardly better. It would be wonderful if OO had

There are a number of different features under Autocorrect..
To turn them all off: Format > Autoformat> click "While Typing" which
will toggle the check mark off.
To be more selective of what gets turned off, go to Tools > Autocorrect,
click the Options tab, and then you have a choice of selecting or
deselecting many of the Autocorrect features.
To turn off Word Completion: Tools > Autocorrect > Word Completion tab >
uncheck the box marked Enable word completion.
