There is a free decoder called Fentun.exe available at http://www.fentun.com/. I use this successfully on WinXP Pro.

You can read about the winmail.dat problem at numerous sites, for example:
http://www.dwheeler.com/essays/microsoft-outlook-tnef.html.

Victor,
Mark has obviously seen this type of problem before, as have I.
If the .dat file is named winmail.dat then it I would take a bet that your email client is M$ Outlook. If so, then that is the problem and would explain why there was no problem when emailing to your own machines. You need to configure it send emails as plain text otherwise only other users of Outlook will be able to open the attachment. This is a known "feature" of Outlook. There are a couple of other things you could do if you are not commited to using Outlook: 1. Change your email client (assuming you are using Outlook under Windows), Thunderbird is a very good, free, alternative. 2. Supply the recipients of your emails with a little program (not free but only a few GBP) called WMDecode which will extract the attachment from the recieved .dat file. I can't remember the url for obtaining WMDecode but you should be able to "Google" it.

Hope this helps.

Hello Victor,

Are these .dat file attachments actually named winmail.dat?

Subject: [users] Files converted to .doc and emailed are
arriving as .dat garbage

I am running a small business dealing with local councils.
all our invoices are created in open office and converted to
word .doc documents for emailing to our customers.
However last year (at around aboput the time we upgraded to
open office
v2.0) our customers started receiving .dat files that came
out as garbage tried sending to our own computers (2 windows
machines and a fedora box), came through as a .doc no probs
but same email sent to customer they received(windows XP and
IE) as garbage.
