Sirs:
When using triple hyphens to add a line under a paragraph the
results are unpredictable. Sometimes there is one line, sometimes
three. Sometimes one or two can be removed, sometimes not. The lines
put in by the Word feature are not retained correctly and
there appears to be no such feature in OO 2.2. I can't see how
to put a box around a paragraph or a simple line under it or over
it or on the side of it. Word uses a set of boxes on the mast but
that feature is also unreliable at best. OO needs a feature that
can add assorted lines.
Go to the menu Format -> Paragraph -> Borders for a box that lets you
choose which sides of the selected paragraphs should have lines,
thickness of lines, spacing of lines, color of lines, and shadowing. You
can also remove lines here.
Play with this a bit to see how it works. It is not immediately
intuitive to some users, but all box screens in OpenOffice.org work like
this. The triple-hyphen entry method is just a short cut which allows
you to add a single line to the bottom of the previous paragraph. Once
added, however, you must use the bordering box to remove it (or remove
the entire paragraph).
You can also modify or create paragraph styles with borders though F11,
select style, and then select the "Borders" tab.
I don't know of any way to add boxes around individual words.
Nor have I seen your problem of three lines being added. Of course, if
you create a new paragraph by splitting a paragraph with attached lining
the new paragraph will normally have the same lining.
A further note:
If you want bordering to appear as an icon on one of the toolbars you
usually have open:
Select Tools -> Customize...
Set Toolbar to the name of the toolbar you wish to modify.
Mouse-press the "Add..." button.
Select "Format" in the Category box.
Select "Borders" in the Commands box.
Mouse-press the "Add" button.
Mouse-press the "Close" button.
Use the arrows to move the "Borders" icon on the toolbar to where you
wish it to be.
Mouse-press "OK".
The "Borders" icon will now appear on the toolbar on screen and you can
change bordering by clicking on it at any time.
