How are you getting Word to run on a Linux version? Regardless, it should not be that hard. Right click a .doc file, and select Open With. Select Word from the list of programs or enter its path at the top. Click to box labeled Remember application association for this type file. Click OK. This is how to do it for KDE, but I can not be certain it will work for you since you have Word running within another program.

I'm using an app called Cross Over Office to enable MS Office to run on KDE. Works fine, but doesn't seem to want to let me change the associated app as you suggested. Although the system says it's updating preferences, the next .doc I try to open reverts to OO. I do love OO, but I need to open some Word docs as .doc's because of graphics and formatting.

Don't know if there's another way...
