Paul
I appreciate your efforts, but still....I must admit I am confused.
I have tried your remedy, but no results. Here is what I can do/have done:
To save a file as an MS file...don;'t I have to have MS installed on my
computer?

No you don't have to have MS Office installed on your computer to use OOo to
save your file as a MS Office file.

I am trying to open an attachment from an email . The attachment is in .wps
format.

Sorry - I thought that it was an Excel file. The easiest way maybe to save
the attachment from your email to your hard drive. Then using OOo open file.
WPS files can be opened using OOo.

I cannot even get to a "file>saveas>and then an OO alternative to MS Works
(what would that be anyway?)

Once you have the file opened (from your computers hard drive) you should be
able to 'save as' then select from a variety of formats. If you don't have
to keep it in WPS format (ie, you don't have to send it back to someone that
only uses these file types) then you can select the OOo file format in the
drop down list.

So this solution is not even something I can try.
Also, I have tried your 'send ' remedy, but how will it send if my email
is Comcast and there is no Comcast mail opening to attach a file to? There
must be more to this than your email indicates.

I'm not sure what Comcast does that is different than other mail providers.
Another way is to simply create a new mail, then attach a OOo file using the
standard create attachment from you mail program.
