Openoffice can read and write .doc files. It is a good text processing
program and I have been using this from 2003 to write technical papers
without any difficulty. Infact, I don't miss the quirks of MS Word that
would drive me nuts ....... especially while editing large documents
with lots of figures.

If you are using windows, could you please check if a printer is setup
and its drivers installed ? If they are not, you may want to ask your
admin to setup the printer and install its driver.
