People,

In a paper I'm writing I have a bunch of quoted text that should be indented (and maybe in a small or bold font). How, in short, do I get the equivalent of <BLOCKQUOTE> IN OO? In essays long past, I set the "tabulation" markers in an inch or two on either side, but am hoping that with OO-2.1 there is an easier way.

thanks for any help!

(1) Create the indentation.
Put the cursor in the relevant paragraph. (Try this with some text that you have already entered.) Notice the three triangular markers at the sides of the horizontal ruler above the text. Drag the lower left marker and the right marker inwards to set the narrower measure that you want. (Don't worry that the upper left one moves too: that's fine.)

(2) Set the character attributes.
Select one whole paragraph (using quadruple-click?) and then use Format | Character... (or use right-click and then select Character... from the context menu) and chose the font there and other attributes there.

(3) Create a style to encapsulate what you have just done.
Go to Format | Styles and Formatting (or use the button at the left of the Formatting toolbar) to open the Styles and Formatting window. Click the Paragraph Styles icon - at the top left. (You are going to create a new paragraph style.) Make sure the cursor is somewhere in the paragraph in the text that you have just set up as you want block quotes to appear. Click on the rightmost icon in the Styles and Formatting window and select New Style from Selection from the drop-down list. Type a suitable name for this style ("Block quote"?) in the Create Style window. Select OK. (You can now close the Styles and Formatting window.)

(4) Apply the new style to other paragraphs.
Put the cursor in each paragraph of block quotes in turn. Select "Block quote" (or whatever) from the drop-down list of styles towards the left of the Formatting toolbar. Another way to do this is with the Format Paintbrush in the Standard toolbar. Put the cursor in a styled paragraph. Click the Format Paintbrush. Click in another paragraph you wish to style. Repeat as necessary. Even better: click the Format Paintbrush twice. Then you can click in as many paragraphs as you need to without returning to recharge your cursor. Cancel this by clicking the Format Paintbrush once more or by just pressing Esc.

Later, you may wish to learn how to import this style into other documents or to create a template containing this style for use in creating similar documents.

I trust this helps.
