When you first save a file for the first time, there is a check
box at the bottom of the Save As window. It is labeled Automatic file
name extension. It should be checked, but your description points to
having been accidentally unchecked. You need to open each of your
files in OOo and use File > Save as. Use the same name, but make sure
this box is checked this time.
You might try this instead. Rename one of these files by adding
the correct file extension. For example, if the file's name were
test, rename it by changing it to test.odt. Then see if you can open
the file in Writer.
