I have a mac os-x.4.9 and am want to use openoffice, but I do not have my installation disc with me. I am currently living abroad and my parents have been unable to find/send my disc. Is there anyway that I can install openoffice? Ashley
Hello Ashley You have different options, up to you to see which one is viable for you. 1. As things stand, OpenOffice.org needs the X11 windowing utility to run on a Mac. I've checked it out, the X11User.pkg on my 10.4.7 Install disk weighs 53,1 MB... a bit much to send by mail. The program itself has less than 1 MB, but I suspect that there are more elements to it, hidden in different folders? I could mail it to you off list, so you can try whether it works... (X11 1.1.3 XFree86 4.4.0) There is the XFree86 site that provides X11 in different versions, but I don't know whether the installations is quite as simple as it looks... Be sure to get the right version (they are at 4.6, but you need 4.4.0): http://www.xfree86.org/downloads.html 2. The volunteer Mac porting team is working day and night, now also with two extra paid people from Sun, to get the native Aqua version of OOo ready. It is expected to be available later this year... maybe a bit too long to wait for. 3. There is a fork of OOo that already works native on Macs, but I'm not too keen to advertise it: the people running this project don't contribute anything to the development of OOo (so only use the free OOo code to make their own version), I don't particularly like how it functions. Main advantage in your case is that it works on Mac without the X11. See for more info the Mac porting pages, in particular http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/x11.html So if you want, I can send you the X11 file off list. Good luck! -- Guy using dutch OOo 2.2 RC 4 on a iMac Intel DualCore Tiger and dutch OOo 2.2 RC 4 on a G4 PPC Powerbook Tiger -- please reply only to [email protected] -- Dodoes can't afford to have headaches
