For future > reference in case this happens to someone else, here is what I did: <snipage> In further consideration of this, I figured out why it was giving me those weird symbols in all the menus. My system was set to use Marlett for Window and menu fonts. This worked for the Gnome desktop and for all applications just fine. But Marlett is an OpenType font and OOo on Linux STILL can't use OpenType fonts, a fact which I find lame, but that's another thread.
