There are two things that you can do about this, but the first
one of them requires the potential employer's cooperation. Send the
document as a PDF. (File > Send > email as PDF)
The second option is also two fold:
1) File > Save As, and then change the default File type from
OpenDocument text (.odt) to Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc).
2) Or, File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word.
(If #2 opens your email client with your document attached as a .doc
file, enter the email address and subject. Then Send.
