Yes, they sold free software, and no it is not a crime. As long as they follow the license, they can charge however much that they want to. And this is far more common than you would think. I have seen no end of magazines that have been run out with a CD filled with software. What is inevitably on those CD/DVDs? OpenOffice (among other fine products). If OpenOffice.org did ban the selling of it or if they even could, we'd be shooting ourselves in the feet. It sounds to me that you feel like you were ripped off. Hell, if I paid money for software that was free I'd be angry about it as well. But the fact that you bought it off them instead of researching online for the lowest possible price is not nor has ever been a crime. Chalk it up to experience and do some research the next time you download. It will be worth it.
