Good tip as it will also generally give an error message - for instance
if you just try to run $ soffice in Ubuntu it will tell you:
The program 'soffice' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing: sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-common

However
The Ubuntu version is located at:
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice
and if you:

$ /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice

it should run.
