Thank you for that information!  It does make a difference
I'm still going to use openoffice - since I was able to reinstall just the 
publisher portion of my office program, I'll stay with that until I learn 
something new as I am trying to get away from Microsoft . .  . .

Draw has functions which are in some ways similar to Publisher, but it
is not a DTP application. Publisher files are a closed, secret,
Microsoft propriety format. So, if you are looking for a program which
will open, edit and save Publisher files, no such program exist yet.
This is how Microsoft keep you locked into using and buying their products.

A good, free, open source DTP program is "Scribus" which can be
downloaded from http://www.scribus.net However, it will not open
Publisher files.
