Hi Dan,
Thanks for the input.

I can make the association between OOo and MSOffice files, but I have to do it on a file-by-file basis. If I make the association with one file (*.doc or *.xls) when I go to open another of the same type I still have to manually make the association.

I noticed that the OOo icon in the applications folder is an alias (which I assume is the same as a shortcut in the Microsoft world) rather than an "original" icon. I suspect that this may be part of the problem. How do I get rid of the alias and get the real OOo icon in my apps folder?

I am really struggling with MAC OS. I have bought the dummies books for both TIger and the iMac but still don't have a feel for the Mac. I guess I have contaminated my mind with Windows and DOS for so long that I have a huge UN-LEARNING curve ahead of me.

I appreciate any advice you can give me.

MSOffice documents.

I am using an iMAC (Intel) running OS X vers. 10.4.9.

From an earlier email from Guy Volt:

To change the icon (i.e. with which program to open a certain file
type):
• highlight one of these files (e.g. a *.doc file)
• Apple-I will open the File Info
• 5th trangle = Open with
• Choose OpenOffice 2.2 (or whatever version you have (if OOo isn't in
the droplist, chose Other and find OOo in the Applications folder)
• Click on Change All to have OOo open all files of this type.
Now the icon of all these files should change to the OOo icon
