I recommend you become acquainted with the Styles window (F11
opens this window). What you want to do is described in detail in the
Writer Guide at
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/. While this
guide was written specifically for the 2.x versions of OOo, styles
have not really changed much since OOo 1.x. One of the main
differences is the name change: from Styles to Styles and Formating.
I would also recomend that you install the 2.2 version of OOo as
it has many enhancements that 1.1 does not.
