Hello, Everyone
I have had the exact same problem a few times.  I download
OpenOffice.org from the following location:
ftp://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffice.org/devel/680/

I was running Fedora Core 6 when the hangs took place.  I definitley
did not have any "Desktop Effects" running.  The worst time was the
first time: I had over 90 days of uptime...
