Autosave is already in OO. You just have to enable it. You can

Will autosave work if you haven't done an explicit save yet?

It does for me. I have autosave enabled for 5 minutes. Every five minutes the save bar across the bottom is activated. I have had a crash before saving the file, and it was recovered.

Just for clarification, beware that AutoSave works only for crash recovery. It doesn't actually save the 'real' file. To do so, you've to use the Save icon in toolbar or CTRL+S shortcut.

There are two ways for OO to close. Either you close it, or it crashes. If you close it, you will be asked to save. If it crashes or if the system is shut down, without saving, the autorecover is available next time you start OO.
