Okay, let's go over this one step at a time.
1. As it has been pointed out, we are not the people who actually
charged you for the product, so your concern is with the company that
sold you the product to see if you can get your money back or not. I'd
think it's a long shot, but you always have that option. Go back to
that store and see what they could do.
2. There are a couple of reasons why you would pay for "free" software,
and this happens more often than you think. OpenOffice is routinely
included on software discs distributed by magazine publishers. In
addition, several people may not have a high speed internet connection.
Some may be even at places where they are charged by the hour. Given
that, it may make more sense to get a physical copy that you can load
off line than it is to rack charges up online.
Also, several companies offer "support" in addition to the physical
media and bundling. Again, you would have to check with whomever your
wife purchased the software from to see what your support is. Now, we
will help you on this list, but it's no more or no less than the support
we would offer anybody who downloaded the software free from our web site.
Finally, I would direct your attention to the license,
http://www.openoffice.org/license.html Anybody is free to take the
software, copy, modify and even distribute it for charge without any
approval from the OpenOffice.org committee so long as they adhere to the
GNU Lesser General Public License.
