thank you both for you response.   I checked the language settings in the
style, but those were set to English.  Apparently something else was wrong.
I have been able to correct the issue by selecting the "wrong" words and use
the "set to default format" (<ctrl><shift><space>).  This solved the issue.
These words were copied from MS Powerpoint, so there is probably something
copied with it (although I used paste special/no formatting, but probable not
with these words)....

That means that the wrong setting must have been in a character setting, rather than a paragraph style.

One way of dealing with occasional spelling problems like this is to right-click on the underlined word. If the word is correctly spelled in another language for which you have the dictionary installed (as it would have been in the case you describe), you may see "Word is <other language>" and "Paragraph is <other language>" as options at the bottom of the context menu. Selecting one of these, as appropriate, can be a quick way of correcting the language attribute.
