They are placed in the user profile:
~/.openoffice.org2/user/fonts/

If you use Printer Admin (spadmin) there is a Fonts button - it's down
at the bottom just to the right of 'New Printer'. Click it and the click
the 'Add' button to add fonts from additional directories.
