Sorry I've taken so long to reply but I think this is exactly what is wrong. I get the same error w/ Ubuntu and the file is very large indeed. I can also save as Office 03 xml when the file is small. I would attach the file in question, but it contains sensitive information for my place of work. I've posted in the bug tracker also.
