Hi Joanne

Hello, I cannot open any email sent to me from person using Microsoft Office. I do not have that application & can't afford it. I was told to Download this "MS Open Office" application at no cost & that would help. I have done that & still cant open anything.

You have been given good advice. OpenOffice.org (no "MS") can open Microsoft Office documents. At present it cannot open the documents from Microsoft Office 2007 (the latest version), but that should be remedied in time.

If you are only interested in looking at Microsoft attachments that people have emailed you, and don't need to modify those documents, another option for you are the Microsoft Office viewers. They open and display MS documents (including attachments). You can learn about them and download them from here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/HA010449811033.aspx

As soon as I click on the "attachment" in the email, I get that pop up that asks for :Administration Rights & starts to activate the "Windows Installer".It wont complete because I don't have a CD to imput the 25 character product key found on the back of it. Is this a set up problem with Verizon, aHP proplem or a Microsoft problem? This was never set up right thru Verizon & I can't get any help.I do have a CD named:" Microsoft Works with Windows" . Is this the same & should I download & install that?I don't want to download something that I have to pay for, can't afford it. Can you advise?

It sounds like you have a demonstration version of Microsoft Office 2007 still installed, and are running the Microsoft Vista operating system. When you try to open the attachment, your computer is using the Microsoft demo program rather than OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org does not ask for product keys or money when you install it.

After downloading OpenOffice.org, you need to install it. You start this process by double clicking the icon of the OpenOffice.org installation file you downloaded. You may have already done this.

When installing OpenOffice.org, one question you are asked is whether you want OpenOffice.org to open Microsoft documents. You are given three tick boxes: one for Word, one for Excel and one for Powerpoint. It is important that you ticked those boxes, otherwise your computer will continue trying to open your attachments with Microsoft Office rather than OpenOffice.org. If you didn't tick those boxes when first installing OpenOffice.org, you may want to reinstall the program.

Lastly, if you continue having trouble opening attachments, it is sometimes easier to save the document to the desktop first, and see whether you can open the file that way.

You may still have lots of questions after reading this email. Please respond to the group with as much detail as possible, including any error messages you see. If any of my guesses (e.g. about you running Vista) have been incorrect, please let us know those details as well.

Hope this helps.

Adrian
