Sorry Dan but can you think of anything else because "use View > Toolbars and
the click Formating in the menu" does nothing at all.
And I am using an OpenOffice.org Writer

The basic things you want are all located in the Formating
toolbar. To access this toolbar, use View > Toolbars and the click
Formating in the menu.
To "get rid" of an unwanted toolbars, use View > Toolbars. Then
click the toolbar you do not want to be visible. Do this for each of
the toolbars you want to hide.
