SORRY! I was preoccupied this a.m. with other thoughts. I know you need the
other information, I guess I wasn't thinking properly.
Operating System is Windows XP
Yes, I have downloaded and installed it. Removed it and installed it again.
When I try to open it I get a 1 second long hour glass that shows it is
working, then it goes away without an error message.

Have you had a previous version of OpenOffice running successfully? If
so, check if its Quickstarter is running (System Tray, grey icon with
two flying birds). If it is, right click on it and choose Exit. Then try
to re-install the new version, preferably after removing the old.
Also, bring up the Task Manager (right click in an empty area of the
Task Bar and choose Task Manager). Click the Applications tab and check
if OpenOffice is there. Also click the Processes tab, click the column
heading "Image Name" to sort the processes by name and check for
"soffice.exe".
OpenOffice 2.2.1, the current version, can take a while to start,
especially if your system is low on [virtual] memory. It often takes 1/2
minute or so on my system if I have a lot of other stuff running or if I
have copied something large to the clipboard.
Also, check the Event Viewer (Start>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer).
There are 3 categories - Application, Security and System. Click on each
in turn to see error messages and warnings in that category. Click on
the column heading "Date" to sort the events into chronological order (I
think that's the default anyway) and check for recent errors - do this
*just* after trying to run OpenOffice.
Otherwise I'm afraid that without sitting at your keyboard and
"playing", I've got no more ideas. Perhaps someone else can help.
