Hi again
Prefacing with an open apology to the list for my "tangent" regarding OOo and the old 75Mhz/32Mb machine; it just took my by complete surprise when comparing the two side-by-side. And yes, I should actually have compared apples to apples...
I hope you don't feel discouraged or misunderstood. My comments weren't meant to be negative (maybe a little balancing), and I loved your story about rediscovering your old computer. I love old machines, lean and mean machines and little machines. A lot of your comments brought back great memories for me.
When I look back at the computers I've had over the last almost two decades, I think they were all about equally responsive. And today's computers are definitely not the most responsive. In some ways they're also not the most powerful. That's a shame.
In the mid to late ninetees - when bloat seemed to be at its worst and I was still buying software - I used to user older versions of software for their speed. And if I ever saw my favourite software on special, I'd buy it: not for my current computer, but so I had options when I bought my next faster computer. That's just silly!
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the software I use at the moment. I find the free and open source software movement(s) very empowering, and I feel like I've got lots of options. I can use software that is slower but has more features (like OpenOffice.org and KDE), or software that has less features but is much more responsive (like Abiword, KOffice, XFCE, Fluxbox).
But in my life there will always be a place for reminiscing about my favourite programs from previous eras. And if my old machines stay alive long enough, I'll be able to play with them from time to time as well! Maybe I should use VirtualBox (or similar) to recreate my favourite DOS, GeoWorks, Win 3.1 and Win 95 systems. Then I can play with them any time I want.
Thanks again NoOp for letting me remember the good old days. Adrian --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
