Please tell us (a) exactly which version of OpenOffice you are trying
to use (b) which Operating System (and version) you are using and (c)
the exact text of the error message.
Also, where did you get the software from? Has it ever worked on your
system?

My interest was in providing feedback but could not figure a way to get
the report sent.
The version of OpenOffice Writer is: 2.2.0 (The free version. )
The operating system is: Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222A
The text of the error message was that an error had occurred and
requested that an error report be sent. There was a file attached
containing the error information.
The software was downloaded from the Internet site of OpenOffice.org.
The software functions well both on the old Armada M700 and on a second
cobbled together box running Windows 98 Second Edition 4.10.2222B. I
have received no error messages while using the software on the "B" box.
One oddity common to both boxes is that if OO Writer is the last
software used before shutting down. the machine hangs at the splash
screen and does not complete shutdown.
Other users have reported similar problems, regarding OOo 2.x and
Windows 98 Second Edition; it seems to be one or two Win98 bugs and
there were also some Microsoft-Patches; perhaps here you'll find some
remedy (... with mental reservation ...) ->

I don't know enough about the software yet to have any firm opinions
except that it copes well with MS Word documents and has done everything
I needed for it to do. If you are interested in an old man's experiences
with OO2 I will be willing to share these with you. My primary
motivation is to make a small contribution to having viable choices when
it comes to software.
