If I enter text like this:
1. buy mile <cursor is here>
And I press enter, OOo automatically starts numbering. If I immediately
press Ctrl+Z, it undoes the numbering and allows me to keep typing.
If I have text that has a numbering style, and I place the cursor into
the text, the "numbering" toolbar is visible. Is the numbering toolbar
visible or not? If it is, then you should be able to toggle numbering off.
