The system is also running CA antivirus 2005.5.5.1, antispy 2005.5.2.1
(also fully updated today). The CA software is that provided with
AT&T/Yahoo, so it is a bit more dated than SW from CA directly. It is
also running ZoneAlarm 6.5.737.

I'm afraid my suggestion that it wasn't happening with new documents was
wrong: by typing a few lines of text in a new blank document, and then
leaving it for an hour or so without saving, I get the same error -- it
creates the file but puts no content inside it. I guess I'd never left a
new document for long enough without saving for it to happen before.
My OS is fully updated, and so is my Security Suite, and using the JRE
version of OOo. Turning off the Security Suite didn't help.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled OOo on both machines, and it
certainly /appears/ to have sorted the problem; if it recurs I'll try
filemon to see if I can capture what's going on...
