You should be able to open your database in Microsoft Works and save it as a 
csv (comma separated values) file. Then, you'll be able to open it in 
OpenOffice Base or Calc.

What you propose should be possible, but your data must first be
translated from a MS Works format into a format that can be used by
other software including OOo (OpenOffice.org).
