Apologies for tagging on to my previous response to Debbie, however in
working with the form that she sent to me I've discovered some
interesting behavior when importing from a MS Word doc w/input fields,
and also run into a problem that I can't figure out (yet:-). Hopefully
someone on the list will have some suggestions.

Background/situation for navigation:

When working with an 'input field' form in MS Word (I tested with MSO
2003 Word) you can easily Tab between the input fields (IF). An example
of such a form is available here:
http://www.customs.govt.nz/library/form/C+Forms/default.htm
download and open the 'Ship Inward Report' document:
<http://www.customs.govt.nz/nr/rdonlyres/af900edf-a296-450a-a78b-d3f190e234b7/0/formc1new.doc>
Note: Debbie sent a typical form from her police department that I am
working with, but the NZ Customs form will work just as well for testing.
In MSO 2003 Word you can also use the Right arrow key to move between
the IF and the Left arrow key to move back to the previous.

I found that the Right and Left arrow keys can be programed in OOo 2.2.1
(linux and Windows) and 2.3dev (linux - I don't have 2.3dev installed on
Windows so I can't test) to do the same via Tools|Customize|Keyboard,
but of course you need to replace the defaults to do this. Interestingly
enough I found that on the Ubuntu'ized (linux) version of OO 2.2.0, this
Right/Left arrow key navigation works exactly as in MSO. Hopefully one
day all the distro's will publish diff's so that we can figure out it all.

New problem:

The MSO Word forms that Debbie's police department uses are protected so
that the person filling out the forms do not alter any of the text
outside of the IF. I expect that this is reasonable and quite common.
MSO Word has a nice feature whereby you can protect the document but
allow IF input. I suspect/hope that OOo has a similar feature, but for
the life of me I can't find it. I've searched the Writer Guide and other
OOo documents and still can't figure out how to do it.
Can anyone offer suggestions on how this can be accomplished? I'm sure
that others making a MSO conversion to OOo must have run across this
previously.

Note: please use the NZ Customs form/doc formc1new.doc as a base test
document so that there is a common test doc. Take that MSO doc, open in
2.2.1 and protect the doc so that text outside of the IF's can not be
changed. Example:

Name of ship

should be protected and not changeable by the user filling out the form,
but the user should be able to enter information in the IF just to the
right of 'Name of ship'. Checkboxes such as: "Crew list sent
electronically" should also be able to be check by mouse (or even some
programed key combination.

So, little help here... Perhaps if we can figure this out we can help
Debbie's PD convert to OOo, not to mention other's that face a similar
situation.
