Maybe using a different file format also understood by WordForMac, maybe
something like RTF ?

I used OOo and WordforMac alternately. Sometimes compatibility isn't
100%, often due to different fonts, printers, templates etc., but
generally quite acceptible, and certainly not worse than the problems
you encounter when switching from one version of Word under Windows to
another.
As CPH suggests, RTF as a go-between may be a solution.
