Format the cell to show the leading zero:

Format|Cells|Numbers|Date

- Select 31. Dec. 1999 in the 'Format' box
- In the 'Format code' box change 'D. MMM. YYYY' to 'DD. MMM. YYYY'

Now when you enter 9/4/1872 you will get 04 Sep. 1872. If you don't want
the period after the day and month Sep (Sep.) remove them 'DD MMM YYYY'
and you will get 04 Sep 1872.
